Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about keeping your pool pristine in the high desert. Browse our categories to find exactly what you're looking for.
General Questions
Because of the high desert winds, dust, and intense summer heat in the Antelope Valley, we highly recommend weekly pool maintenance. This ensures your water chemistry remains balanced and prevents algae blooms and pump strain from debris buildup.
Yes! We are fully licensed (CSLB #1068067) to handle major architectural upgrades and equipment repairs. We inspect, tune, and replace pool pumps, heaters, and filtration systems to keep your pool circulating perfectly.
Over time, hard water in our area leaves tough calcium scale on pool tiles. We are one of the only companies in the Antelope Valley offering premium glass bead blasting—a safe, highly effective method that removes scale and restores your tile to a pristine finish without damaging it.
Absolutely. We hold a C-61 (D-35) license (CSLB #1068067) and carry full liability insurance. Don't trust your major investment to an unlicensed 'pool guy'.
Acid Washing
Acid washing is a highly effective deep-cleaning process that strips a microscopic layer of plaster from your pool's surface. It removes stubborn algae stains, hard water scaling, and discoloration that regular brushing cannot eliminate.
When performed by a licensed professional like AV Pool Pros, it is perfectly safe. However, because it removes a thin layer of plaster, it should only be done when absolutely necessary (typically every 3 to 5 years).
The entire process usually takes one to two days. It involves completely draining the pool, applying the acid wash, neutralizing the wastewater, and then immediately refilling the pool to protect the plaster.
Yes. We strictly neutralize and safely dispose of all acidic wastewater according to Palmdale and Lancaster environmental regulations, ensuring no harm to your landscaping or pets.
Algae Treatment
Green pools are usually caused by an algae bloom resulting from low chlorine levels, poor water circulation, high phosphates, or extreme summer heat in the high desert.
Depending on the severity, our intensive algae shock treatments and filtration cycles can typically transform a dark green swamp into a crystal-clear pool within 3 to 5 days.
Usually, no. In 90% of cases, we can kill the algae chemically with a heavy shock treatment, algaecides, and intense filtering without needing to drain the expensive water.
No. The chlorine levels during an algae shock treatment will be exceptionally high. We will notify you exactly when the chemical levels have dropped back to a safe swimming range.
Equipment & Repair
Yes! We are fully licensed (CSLB #1068067) to handle major architectural upgrades and equipment repairs. We inspect, tune, and replace pool pumps, heaters, and filtration systems.
Absolutely. Variable-speed pumps (VSPs) use up to 80% less electricity than single-speed pumps, often paying for themselves in energy savings within the first year. They are also significantly quieter.
Common signs include the heater not igniting, strange clicking noises, water not reaching the set temperature, or error codes on the digital display. We diagnose both gas and electric heaters.
Yes, we install cutting-edge Jandy and Fluidra automation systems that allow you to control your pump, heater, lights, and spa jets directly from your smartphone.
Leak Detection
In the Antelope Valley heat, losing 1/4 inch of water per day to evaporation is normal. If you are losing an inch or more per day, you likely have a leak.
No. We use advanced acoustic sonar and pressure testing to pinpoint the exact location of the leak underground, so we only excavate the specific spot needing repair.
The skimmer throat—where the plastic skimmer housing meets the concrete pool shell—is the most common place for structural leaks due to ground settling.
Yes. Unlike companies that only 'find' leaks, AV Pool Pros is a fully licensed construction contractor. We find the leak, dig it out, repair the plumbing or shell, and restore the deck.
Pool Cleaning
Because of the high desert winds, dust, and intense summer heat in the Antelope Valley, we highly recommend weekly pool cleaning to prevent algae blooms and pump strain.
Our weekly service includes skimming the surface, brushing the walls and steps, vacuuming the floor, emptying skimmer and pump baskets, and meticulously testing and balancing the water chemistry.
No, all standard balancing chemicals (chlorine, muriatic acid, bicarbonate) are included in your monthly service rate. You never have to store dangerous chemicals in your garage.
Yes! Our technicians log their visits. We lock the gate behind us and leave your pool perfectly balanced and sparkling clean every single week.
Pool Covers
Yes, we install heavy-duty mesh and solid safety covers. These are anchored into the concrete deck and are strong enough to support the weight of a child or pet, providing ultimate peace of mind.
Mesh covers allow rain and melting snow to drain through while blocking debris, meaning no water bags or pumps are needed. Solid covers block 100% of sunlight, preventing any winter algae growth, but require a cover pump for standing water.
Absolutely. A good cover drastically reduces water evaporation, cuts down on chemical consumption by protecting the chlorine from UV rays, and traps heat, lowering your heating bills.
High-quality safety covers, when properly maintained and stored during the summer, typically last between 10 to 15 years.
Filter Cleaning
Cartridge filters should be disassembled and deep-cleaned every 3 to 6 months, while DE filters require backwashing and new powder roughly once a month, with a full tear-down twice a year.
If your pool water looks cloudy, your pump sounds louder than usual, or the pressure gauge on the filter tank reads 8–10 PSI higher than its clean starting pressure, it is time for a cleaning.
A full tear-down means we completely disassemble the filter housing, remove the internal grids or cartridges, degrease and acid-wash them to remove embedded oils and scale, inspect the manifolds for cracks, and re-lubricate the O-rings.
Yes. A clogged filter creates immense back-pressure on your plumbing. This forces the pump motor to work exponentially harder, which can overheat the motor and lead to premature failure.
Pool Maintenance
Yes, for homeowners who enjoy skimming and brushing their own pool but don't want to handle dangerous chemicals or struggle with complex water balancing, we offer a specialized chemical-only route.
Improperly balanced water doesn't just look bad—it is highly corrosive. High acid levels will literally eat away your plaster and copper heat exchanger, while high alkalinity causes severe scaling.
Absolutely. Saltwater pools still generate chlorine and require strict pH and alkalinity balancing. We service, clean, and replace salt cells to keep your system running flawlessly.
As a full-service C-61 contractor, our maintenance clients get priority repair scheduling. We will diagnose the issue during our weekly visit and send you an immediate repair quote.
Remodeling & Plaster
A remodel can range from a simple re-plastering to a complete backyard transformation, including new waterline tile, coping, adding a Baja shelf or spa, and upgrading to energy-efficient equipment.
Depending on the scope of the project, a standard re-plaster and tile replacement takes 1 to 2 weeks. Extensive structural modifications or adding a spa can take 4 to 8 weeks.
We highly recommend pebble finishes (like PebbleTec) or quartz finishes. They are significantly more durable, stain-resistant, and can easily last 15 to 20 years compared to standard plaster.
Yes. In partnership with American Pool Construction, we hold both C-53 (Pool Builder) and C-61 licenses. We handle all city permitting, engineering, and heavy equipment operations.
Tile Decalcification
Glass bead blasting is a highly specialized, eco-friendly process that uses compressed air to shoot tiny, perfectly round glass beads at your pool tile. It safely shatters and removes thick calcium scale without scratching the delicate tile glaze.
The high desert has extremely hard water. As pool water evaporates in the summer heat, it leaves behind thick layers of calcium carbonate and magnesium scale, which bakes onto the tile at the waterline.
No! We only need to lower the water level a few inches below the tile line. Our specialized blasting equipment vacuums up the glass beads and calcium debris as it works.
Absolutely not. Using harsh pumice stones or acid will severely scratch and permanently dull your expensive pool tile. Glass bead blasting is the only professional, non-destructive method to remove heavy scale.
construction
The cost of a custom pool varies widely based on size, materials, and features like spas, waterfalls, or custom lighting. We offer free consultations to provide an accurate estimate based on your specific vision.
On average, a custom pool build takes 8 to 12 weeks from excavation to completion, depending on weather conditions and the complexity of the design.
Yes. In partnership with American Pool Construction Inc., we manage the entire permitting and engineering process with the local city or county to ensure everything is up to code.
Absolutely. We work closely with you to select premium materials, from custom tile and coping to high-end interior finishes like PebbleTec, ensuring your pool perfectly matches your aesthetic.
